Van Lear, Kentucky

 · Van Lear, Kentucky, was incorporated in 1912 in Johnson County. Named for Van Lear Black, a director of Consolidation Coal Company, the town owes its existence to the entrepreneurial efforts of John Caldwell Calhoun Mayo, born in Pike County, Kentucky, who taught in a one-room school near the confluence of Miller''s Creek and Sorghum Hollow.

HARLAN COALFIELD

The Harlan Coalfield was opened up in the 1910s by the Louisville & Nashville (L&N) Railroad. Coal seams include the Harlan, Kelloika, High Splint, Low Splint, McKnight, and Wallins seams. Mining conditions were good, but, at times, managment-labor relations were terrible. Still, when I was in Harlan County I never met one rude person.
